Can you drink cenote water?
No, don't drink cenote water untreated. It looks crystal clear but can contain bacteria from soil, animals and nearby septic systems. It is part of the aquifer that supplies the region's tap water, which is treated first.
Short answer: no, not untreated
Cenote water often looks cleaner than tap water, but clear is not the same as safe. Tests on Yucatán groundwater have reported fecal bacteria, nitrates and other pollutants in many cenotes, including ones that look perfect. Drinking it straight can cause stomach illness, so treat it like any untreated lake or river water.
Why clear water can still carry germs
- Thin soil and porous limestone let rainwater and waste reach the aquifer within hours or days, with little natural filtering.
- Many towns, homes and some hotels use septic tanks or soakaway pits instead of sewers (reported), so wastewater seeps down into the same groundwater.
- Pig and poultry farms and crop chemicals in Yucatán state have been linked to nitrate pollution (reported).
- Swimmers, bats, birds and fallen animals add bacteria directly to the water.
- Bacteria are invisible: the water's clarity comes from filtered limestone, not from being germ-free.
Cenotes and Yucatán's tap water
The peninsula has almost no rivers, so almost all drinking water comes from the same underground aquifer that fills the cenotes. Cities pump it from wells and treat it with chlorine. Even so, most locals and visitors drink bottled or purified (garrafón) water, not tap water. That is a good rule for your trip too.
What about swallowing a little while swimming?
A mouthful by accident is very unlikely to make a healthy adult sick, and millions of people swim in cenotes every year. Try to keep your mouth closed when you jump in, don't let small children drink the water, and skip swimming if you have open wounds or an upset stomach.
Is cenote water clean enough to swim in?
Yes. Visitor cenotes are generally fine for swimming, and many check their water and ask everyone to shower first. Water quality can drop after heavy rain or at very crowded sites. If water looks cloudy, smells bad or has a film on top, choose another cenote. See our guide on whether cenotes are safe for the full picture.
If you had to drink it (emergency only)
- Boil it for at least one minute, or
- Use a proper water filter plus purification tablets.
- Filtering alone doesn't remove chemicals like nitrates, so this is for emergencies, not everyday drinking.
Did the Maya drink cenote water?
Yes. Cenotes and wells were the Maya's main water source, and many cities, including Chichén Itzá, grew up next to them. The Maya also collected rainwater in underground cisterns called chultunes. Back then there were no septic tanks, farm chemicals or crowds of swimmers, so the water was far less polluted.
How you can help keep cenote water clean
- Shower before swimming and skip sunscreen, lotion and bug spray.
- Never use soap or shampoo in or near a cenote.
- Use the toilets provided and take your rubbish home.
- Choose hotels that treat their wastewater.
What scientists have found
Recent studies of cenotes across the Yucatán aquifer measured nitrate, lead and E. coli above drinking-water limits at many sites, plus antibiotic-resistant bacteria and PFAS chemicals. Pollution is highest near growing towns and resorts.
Why clear water can still be unsafe
Bacteria, chemicals and dissolved metals are invisible. A cenote can look perfectly clear and still contain sewage-linked germs carried through cracks in the limestone.
Swimming vs drinking
Swimming in a staffed, well-managed cenote is generally fine for healthy visitors. Keep your mouth closed, do not swim with open wounds or when sick, and shower afterwards.
How you can help
Use the mandatory shower, skip sunscreen and repellent, take your trash, and choose operators that treat waste water. Local groups also run clean-ups and water monitoring.

Can you drink cenote water: frequently asked questions
Is clear cenote water safe to drink?
No; germs and chemicals are invisible, so clear does not mean safe.
Is it safe to swim in cenotes?
Generally yes at well-managed, staffed cenotes; avoid swallowing water.
Can you drink cenote water?
Not untreated. It can contain bacteria and nitrates even when crystal clear. Boil or purify it if you ever must drink it.
Is cenote water salty?
The top layer is fresh. Near the coast, heavier saltwater lies below it, and divers can see the line between them (the halocline).
Is tap water in Yucatán from cenotes?
Yes, it is pumped from the same aquifer and chlorinated, but most people still drink bottled or purified water.
What happens if I swallow cenote water?
Usually nothing. A small accidental mouthful rarely causes problems for healthy adults.
Did the Maya drink from cenotes?
Yes, cenotes were their main source of fresh water, together with rainwater cisterns.
