Miguel Colorado: Campeche's best-known cenotes
Miguel Colorado is a jungle community near Champotón with very large cenotes. Its main cenote is reported at about 250 m across with rock walls over 80 m high. A local cooperative, Los Reyecitos, runs guided walks, kayaking, swimming and a zipline over the water.
Getting there
Miguel Colorado is inland in southern Campeche. The Tren Maya station at Escárcega is the nearest rail stop, and the cooperative can help arrange transport. With a car, it fits into a road trip between Campeche city, Calakmul and Bacalar.
More than a swim
The cooperative also offers bird watching, traditional meals cooked outdoors, cacao workshops and stargazing, with simple lodging at its posada. It is a good choice for travelers who want community tourism away from the crowds.
Why Campeche has fewer cenotes
Most cenotes form where groundwater sits close to the surface in flat limestone. In much of Campeche the land is higher and the water table deeper, so fewer collapses reach water. Northern Campeche, near Yucatán state, has more small cenotes.
Tips
Bring cash, insect repellent for the jungle walk (applied after swimming), water shoes and sun protection. Book ahead with the cooperative, as services are small and run locally.
